John was a man of about 5’1 in his early 50’s. When I first saw him he looked ready for the elements. He was decked out in layers, a trench coat, and an Indiana Jones hat with a head lamp on it. But as I started to talk with him, I could tell he had the mind of a 12 year-old. It was his first time being homeless. He had been staying with a friend, but that fell through. Now he was sleeping at Project Host Soup Kitchen or in front of the Place of Hope. He had an SSI check and a payee, but he was lost.
For the following month as we helped him find a home, many things happened to John that bothered me. He was attacked; his coat was stolen; he was robbed; and he even got involved in some scams. We knew that we had to work harder to motivate him to end his homeless episode. Finally, with the help of a local landlord, John got a trailer.
