Position Summary:

This position is responsible for supporting the Striving to Thrive program to fulfill the mission of helping individuals to improve economic mobility and to successfully pursue goals related to career, finances, housing, education, and overall well-being. The Economic Mobility Partner works directly with program participants to address immediate needs, set appropriate short- and long-term goals, develop fundamental executive functioning skills and self-efficacy, and chart a viable path to a place of thriving. Relationships and work with individual participants often will last for multiple years.

Direct Service

  • Independently manage a schedule of coaching appointments, group instruction, staff meetings, and other responsibilities.
  • Engage one-on-one with newly enrolling individuals to learn about their goals, career interests, and motivations for program participation; to identify needs and barriers, as well as personal strengths and resources, relevant to the successful pursuit of those goals; and to establish an appropriate service delivery plan.
  • Provide program participants with long-term, intensive coaching intended to support the development of self-sufficiency and financial well-being. Utilize Motivational Interviewing, Mobility Mentoring®, and trauma-informed care – among other interpersonal strategies – to effectively build rapport and trust with participants; to facilitate behavior change and foster self-regulatory skills; to guide the ongoing development and modification of appropriate goals; and to develop, monitor, and continuously revise the plan for achievement of goals. Coaching is typically provided 1-4 times per month for each participant and often will extend over the course of multiple years.
  • Partner with each program participant to address barriers to sustained quality employment and financial self-sufficiency, providing direct assistance according to each individual’s capacity. Common issues include transportation, childcare, criminal background, substance abuse, housing, mental health, physical health, legal documentation, education, and family stability. Barriers may be addressed by providing guidance regarding effective strategies, connecting individuals with other resources and programs in the community, providing direct aid, or personally advocating for an individual with third parties, as appropriate.
  • Work in tandem with program participants to conduct successful job searches, identifying and pursuing appropriate employment opportunities, crafting high quality resumes, navigating employer hiring processes, and obtaining necessary work supplies. Provide career/vocational counseling when necessary.
  • Alongside the Financial Coach, provide guidance and support related to financial wellness, including navigating a financial crisis, assessing income and expenses, developing a household budget, avoiding predatory practices and products, and establishing appropriate goals related to savings and credit. Collaborate with the Financial Wellness Manager to serve individuals with complex financial problems or goals.
  • Maintain communication with program participants for ongoing support toward long-term goals and outcomes tracking.
  • Lead group workshops in an engaging and effective manner to address topics such as job search, career/vocational exploration, and personal effectiveness skills. Incorporate both instructor-led lessons, as well as group discussion; facilitate activities such as mock interviews; and utilize digital, internet-based, and print materials. Coordinate and collaborate with other staff and volunteers in workshop facilitation.
  • Assist with computer tutoring set-up and scheduling as needed.

Information Management

  • Maintain accurate and complete records in the agency client database, including: contact, demographic, and assessment information; detailed service tracking notes for each significant participant interaction; an updated comprehensive financial profile; and self-sufficiency outcomes data for each participant.
  • Maintain accurate participant records for the agency’s matched savings program.
  • Track and provide time and effort documentation for stakeholders, as necessary.
  • Effectively utilize phone, text, email, and other technology to facilitate and organize a high volume of communications with participants and staff.
  • Maintain effective communication with community partner agencies to coordinate service delivery for shared program participants.
  • Effectively utilize multiple information technology tools and platforms to collaborate with staff on joint projects and to organize participant tracking information.

Within the Team

  • Participate in team meetings and projects to improve the services provided and opportunities available to participants.
  • Communicate regularly with other team members concerning individual participants and program offerings. Gather and utilize input and institutional knowledge from team members as needed to inform and strengthen practices. Actively participate in staffing meetings.

Within the Agency

  • Participate in all agency-wide meetings and special events as able.
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and professional work environment.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of services offered through other programs at United Ministries and connect participants with these services when appropriate.
  • Work directly with other program staff to maximize program integration and coordination of services, particularly for co-enrolled participants.
  • Believe in and act in accordance with the values and mission of United Ministries.
  • Engage in professional development activities and embody a spirit of lifelong learning.

Community

  • Establish and maintain partnerships with other community agencies, employers, training providers, and funders.
  • Remain informed of current issues in Greenville related to employment, wellness, and self-sufficiency.
  • Communicate with partner agencies and businesses as needed to promote Striving to Thrive.
  • Act as a knowledgeable, professional, and discerning representative of the agency in formal and informal community efforts and conversations regarding goal setting and asset attainment.
  • Be responsive to inquiries and requests from individuals in the community who are seeking services or seeking help for others.

Essential Skills and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Previous experience in counseling, employment services, and/or a relevant human services field
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with all parties using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) best practices, as well as to assist people facing barriers of all types.
  • Interpersonal coaching skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and facilitate conversation in a group setting
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), Zoom, and Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets)
  • Proficiency with navigating, researching, and collecting information from the internet
  • Proficiency with using a database and spreadsheets to organize and track various kinds of participant data
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Integrity and discretion
  • Demonstrated skill with time management, planning, organization, and follow-up
Beneficial Skills and Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Counseling, or other related field
  • Bilingual skills
  • Related lived experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices regarding the job search, job applications, and resume creation
  • Demonstrated understanding of best practices regarding financial coaching, credit building, and asset building
  • Working knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, Mobility Mentoring®, and Trauma-Informed Care
