Matt is a great example of how a positive attitude and a very strong work ethic can pay off. He held several jobs in the concrete business before starting his own business. Unfortunately, he did not have a lot of training in how to run a business, and he struggled with the administrative side, such as payroll and taxes. He came to United Ministries to get his GED so that he could advance his career and his business, and while here, he heard about our Employment Readiness program.
He realized that he needed to find another job while he works on his GED until he can focus on his business again. He came through our interview classes, and one week later, he obtained employment through MAU Workforce Solutions. Matt had to take a pay cut, and he says he works a lot harder than some of the younger men at the warehouse. His supervisors also praise him for his effort on the job. He is taking advantage of working overtime hours so that he can catch up on his bills.
Matt worked with his employment counselor to create a budget, and he is starting a matching savings account through our partnership with the CommunityWorks Carolina. He also was exposed to resources in our financial class that help small business owners with guidance on starting a business, which he plans to utilize moving forward.
