Take a Step to Change a Life October 1

United Ministries’ signature community-wide fundraising event, the Transformation Walk presented by Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, is expanding this year to offer participants more opportunities for fun and engagement.  Held Sunday, October 1 at Fluor Field, the Transformation Walk will begin with a block party on Field Street featuring a food truck rally and live family-friendly music from the Erica Berg Collective.

Families, groups, and individuals are invited to enjoy the balloon artist, magician, games, and music from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Field Street.  The event is free and open to the public, with all proceeds of the block party raffle benefiting United Ministries.   The three raffle prizes are:  a BMW performance driving school class, four Michelin tires, and $500 of Spinx gas discount cards.  Raffle tickets are $10 each.

The Transformation Walk raises awareness about those among us who are in need of a “hand-up” in order to make positive transitions in their lives.  Walkers follow a 3-mile route that passes service agencies in downtown Greenville who are serving our neighbors in need.  Volunteers along the route hold signs with local poverty statistics that are often surprising.

“The Transformation Walk is a ministerial and sensory understanding of the sometimes marginalized and forgotten community,” says Dr. Alex Garvey, Senior VP of Mission for Bon Secours St. Francis Health System.  “We are honored to partner with United Ministries on this important event within our community.”

Awards will be given to the teams and individuals who raise the most money at a brief ceremony following the block party.  Joann Miller, director of religious education at St. Mary’s Catholic Church says, “After participating in my first walk, I knew that we needed to continue for many reasons:  the money raised each year changes many lives.  It’s something that we can do locally in which parents can participate, and young students get excited about it, while simultaneously it helps them see the bigger picture.  Each year, the students become invested in the process and take on the challenge of raising so much money one dollar at a time.”  Last year, St. Mary’s Confirmation Class raised over $6,000 for the Transformation Walk, winning top fundraising large team.

Walkers are encouraged to engage with the route by joining a fun and educational Quizizz online.  Students are encouraged to enter their school name when they register for the walk and when they sign up for the Quizizz to join the HAND-UP Challenge, a school competition.

Funds raised provide programs in education and employment, crisis assistance, and homeless services through United Ministries’ integrated service model.  It’s free to register at www.Walk.United-Ministries.org.  Then – start a team, gather donations, have fun, and make a difference.
